Introduction to the Science of Hadith (ʿUlum al-Hadith)

Course Description

This course is offered as part of the Qurtuba Islamic Sciences Program, a series of structured courses dedicated to exploring the classical disciplines of Islamic scholarship.

This course provides a structured and in-depth introduction to ʿUlum al-Hadith (the Sciences of Hadith)—the scholarly disciplines developed by Muslim scholars to preserve, analyze, and authenticate the sayings and actions of the Prophet ﷺ.

Students will trace the historical development of hadith transmission from the earliest generations of Islam through the classical period of scholarly codification. Along the way, they will become familiar with the technical terminology and analytical methods scholars used to evaluate narrations, including:

• Classification of hadith according to authenticity
• Evaluation of narrators through ʿIlm al-Rijāl
• Identification of hidden defects or fabricated reports

The course will also examine the formation of the major hadith compendiums, the methodological differences between early scholars, and the broader intellectual tradition that preserved the Sunnah with remarkable precision.

Students will engage with foundational works in hadith studies and gain a framework for understanding both classical scholarship and contemporary discussions surrounding hadith.

This is a structured classroom course intended for students seeking deeper engagement with the Islamic scholarly tradition. The course follows a cumulative format in which each session builds upon the previous one.
