Part of the Qurtuba Islamic Sciences Program

Why this course matters: Build a strong foundation for understanding the Qur’an and engaging with it meaningfully in daily life.

Course Description

The Qur’an is the central source of guidance in Islam, shaping the faith, worldview, and intellectual tradition of Muslims for over fourteen centuries. Understanding the Qur’an requires not only engaging with its message, but also becoming familiar with the disciplines developed by Muslim scholars to preserve, interpret, and reflect upon it.

This course offers a structured introduction to the Qur’an and the classical sciences developed around it (ʿUlum al-Qur’an). Students will explore the history of revelation, the compilation and preservation of the Qur’an, its organization and themes, and the scholarly methods used to understand its meanings.

Key topics include:

  • Makki and Madani revelations
  • Occasions of revelation (asbāb al-nuzūl)
  • Qur’anic recitation and preservation
  • The science of tafsīr
  • The role of translation in accessing the Qur’an

Designed as a hybrid between an academic introduction and a reflective community class, the course aims to build foundational knowledge while cultivating a deeper relationship with the Qur’an.
